Belgian train operator puts reputation ahead of punctuality for Tour of Flanders

The Belgian train operator, Infrabel, has announced that trains will wait for cyclists in the Tour of Flanders on Sunday. In the past, cyclists have had to wait for trains to go past or risk disqualification (or worse) if they try to cross the line while the lights are on red.

There was a controversial incident in the Paris-Roubaix race in 2006, which Infrabel is keen to avoid. As the people of Flanders are fanatical about their road cycling, Infrabel’s reputation could be severely damaged if the race was ‘sabotaged’ by the train timetable. This decision generates some good PR as well as avoiding any damage to Infrabel’s reputation.
